CSIR NET/IIT JAM - JNU (Biology Stream) Preparation and for Undergraduate and Post Graduate Courses Oswald Avery, Colin MacLeod, and Maclyn McCarty showed that DNA (not proteins) can transform the properties of cells, clarifying the chemical nature of genes. Avery, MacLeod and McCarty identified DNA as the "transforming principle" while studying Streptococcus pneumoniae, bacteria that can cause pneumonia.
Transforming Principle is a term given to the substance that could be transferred from non living cells to living cells, causing the living cell to show characteristics of the non living cell.
